In January of 2024 I visited Oaxaca, Mexico. It was a destination I had on my radar for quite some time. I am fascinated by indigenous mesoamerican history and culture, and Oaxaca delivers spectacularly. It is also known as a bit or a foodie destination, with documentaries by famous personalities such as Gordon Ramsey, other media outlets, and countless Youtubers. So, I had to check it out.

The cuisine of Oaxaca is unusual and unexpected. The region of Oaxaca is fiercely independent. In fact there are some villages that were never touched by the conquering Spanish, and never saw in influence in European food ingredients. Oaxaca understandably strives to maintain it’s authentic identity, and cuisine is a primary example of this. I would describe it generally as very earthy, with muted flavors. Street food is very popular here. While the memelas are very tasty, for me personally the food of Oaxaca did not blow my mind. Some people love it, but among all the people I met,  I was not alone in my lukewarm assessment. However, who cares what I think. Do your research if you plan to go.

I am not claiming to have seen it all, done it all, eaten it all. I only photographed what I personally ordered in whatever establishment. I only scratched the surface too, since I was struggling to just comprehend everything in such a short time. These photos represent this one trip to Oaxaca. I will refine and improve this page on an ongoing basis.
