Ladies and Gentleman, the food scene in Peru – especially Lima – is something you really must experience. Between 2021 and 2023 I spent about six months in Peru over several visits. Most of this time I was studying Spanish in eating out in Lima. My mission was to try all the best and amazing restaurants, from casual everyday to elegant and fancy. By no means did I make it to every restaurant, but I made a pretty good dent. There are so many amazing restaurants in Lima, it takes multiple visits.
While I consider myself somewhat of a “foodie,” I do not consider myself a very adventurous eater. For some reason the cuisine of Lima fascinated me so much. So my fun project was to visit many eateries and photograph all the food. This began with ceviche, but quickly expanded to being amazed by other dishes and meals – other traditional dishes like rocoto relleno, nikkei, the very impressive fruit bowls (which we simply do not have at this level in the United States), lovely breakfasts, desserts, on and on.
You could visit the countryside and discover numerous more dishes specific to certain regions, but this was beyond my scope and interests. It gets very strange out there. One dish I just never got around to was cuy – guinea pig. My son and I went out specifically for cuy to a restaurant in Lima on one occasion (Panchita), but they had sold out of it for the day. You can easily find it outside of Lima, it just wasn’t a high priority for me. Enjoy!
